Ready to go on your first RV trip? Use these tips to make the trip planning process easier.
Make a Budget
If you’re just settling into RV travel, then you’re going to have to get in the habit of budgeting. This can be challenging at first, but after a few trips you’ll discover where you’re over or underestimating costs.
It’s helpful to ask yourself key questions, such as:
Are you going to be dining out whenever you’re hungry or cooking all of your meals on the cheap?
- How much will your campground cost,or will you be boondocking?
- What will you set aside for attractions and amusements?
- How much will you need to have on hand for gas to get there and back?
All of these things need to be considered.
One final note on budgeting, try and set aside a reasonable amount of money in case of an emergency. Having a few hundred bucks in cash stowed away for a rainy day can save a trip that would otherwise go way off the rails.
Pack Properly
Make a packing list. Not only for the RV, but for yourself. Having an RV as a home away from home is great, until you realize you forgot all of your toiletries, your phone charger, and a change of socks.
For yourself, consider the weather you’ll be travelling in, and what you’ll be doing. Big box stores make a mint off of travellers who’ve forgotten their swimsuit because it’s chilly back home, so think ahead and prepare yourself for some spontaneity. Always have an extra set of warm dry clothes on hand for each traveller as well, just in case.
For your RV, make sure you pack for safety, and comfort. Get a good emergency kit, and fill it out with anything you feel it’s missing. Get a set of toiletries for your RV so you don’t have to pack and unpack them throughout the summer, and don’t forget to bring along a deck of cards or some games to stay entertained while you’re away from home!
You’ve gone through your checklist, have your route planned, your budget set, and all the gear that you will need for your journey. You are ready to hit the road in your RV for your next adventure!
